Stonewalling....

One of the things I miss about the landscapes out here,
is stone walls. Where I come from, stone walls are the
property lines. It is illegal to move a stone wall.

The start of stone walls in the United States was in
New England, in the 1700 and 1800's. It served two
purposes. One was to get rid of the field stones in the
land so it could be tilled. The other was to put lines
around their property that has lasted over 200 years.

It is a dying art. A few have fallen down or have become
sunken in to the ground. But there are people who have
brought back the art. The Portuguese are fairly famous
for doing the best job of it. It is lining up the proper stone
with another. Some flat and some round. But knowing which
should go where is the main thing.

People are paying good money to redo their walls. As they
are part of the landscape all over.
